Nature’s Alchemy: Costa Rica Discovery Trip, Part 2

Nature’s Alchemy: Costa Rica Discovery Trip, Part 2

Transformation isn’t random. It’s elemental.

In this second chapter of my Costa Rica Discovery Trip series, we travel deep into Rincón de la Vieja, a volcanic region in northern Costa Rica where the land literally steams with life. Here, the four elements — Earth, Fire, Water, and Air — reveal how nature transforms itself, and how we, too, move through the same cycles of change.

Earth: The Foundation of Change

Our journey begins grounded in the Earth, with the Chorotega people of Buena Vista del Rincón. These artisans carry forward a pottery tradition that’s thousands of years old, shaping local clay into vessels using pigments made from crushed stones. Their work is slow, deliberate, and deeply connected to the land — a living dialogue between human hands and the natural world.

Nearby, at El Trapiche, an ox turns the wheel of an old sugar mill, pressing sweet juice from sugarcane. Watching the slow rhythm of the process feels like a meditation — a reminder that the Earth gives nothing without patience and effort.

Fire: The Catalyst of Transformation

Next, we step into the energy of Fire — the volcano itself.
Rincón de la Vieja rises nearly 2,000 meters, its slopes alive with bubbling mud pots, steam vents, and hot springs. Fire is the activator of change, burning away what no longer serves. Its energy fuels the ecosystem — and, quite literally, the country.

Costa Rica now generates 99% of its electricity from renewable sources, and at the time of our visit, a new geothermal power plant was being built near the volcano. It’s a living example of how nature’s fire can sustain modern life without destroying it.

Water: Cleansing and Renewal

When the rains return during Costa Rica’s green season, the jungle comes alive again. Rivers swell, waterfalls roar, and everything pulses with renewal.

One of my favorite experiences was a natural waterslide built by locals using collected rainwater. There’s no control once you’re in — you just let gravity and flow do the work. It’s pure, laughing surrender. That’s what Water teaches best: to release, to flow with what is, to trust the current.

Air: The Freedom of Perspective

From the ground, we rise into the Air — soaring through the jungle canopy on ziplines that reveal a whole new perspective. The higher you go, the more the world opens. You begin to see the forest not as separate trees, but as one living system — interconnected, breathing, alive.

That’s what Air teaches: how to rise above daily pressures and see from a higher vantage point, where everything makes sense again.

Integration & Rebirth

The final stage of our visit brings all elements together. At the volcanic hot springs and mud baths, the Earth provides the clay and the heat from Fire. The Water cleanses and renews, while the rising steam — Air — carries it all upward, symbolizing the return of spirit and energy.

In those moments of stillness and warmth, transformation becomes tangible. You feel the body relax, the mind quiet, the soul recalibrate. It’s a full-circle experience — a reminder that surrender isn’t passive. It’s trust in motion.

Ojos en la Niebla: A Painting Inspired by the Elements

As the steam rises and the jungle exhales, I think of my painting, Ojos en la Niebla"Eyes in the Mist". It captures the energy of Costa Rica’s rainy season: lush green mountains wrapped in fog, a river winding below, raindrops shimmering in the foreground. From the mist emerges the face of a jaguar spirit, glowing with orange fire.

Earth, Air, Water, and Fire — all alive together, both in the painting and in the land that inspired it.
